I'll attest to the E39 as a reliable DD/commuter car. I have a 2001 530i Sport with 149,2XX miles so far; I'm the second owner. On the autobahn we drove for hours on end at speeds between 100 and 120. When we got the car back here we couldn't believe how rediculous it is to keep such a car down to 80mph. Go through different diagrams one of them has to work! For the high cluster, you need both the black and white connectors to be connected. On the black connector, pin 1 needs to be ground and pins 7 and 17 need to be connected to power. On the white connector, pins 9 and 10 are ground and pins 15 and 16 are power.
